Our UK Comics include:British Comics --The Beano (popular UK Comics)Inspired by the success of The Dandy (4th December 1937), The Beano Comic, as it was originally known, appeared on July 30th 1938. The success of both The Beano and The Dandy which both survive today is fortuitous due to the fact that both British Comics were released immediately prior to the outbreak of the Second World war in 1939. Big Eggo, drawn by Reg Carter, was on the very first Beano cover. British Comics --The Dandy ( famous UK Comics)It was the job of Albert Barnes, The Dandy Comic editor to usher in a new era in British comics. On 4th December 1937, The Dandy Comic, as it was originally called, made its debut. The Dandy differed from its predecessors in a number of new and innovative ways. The Dandy rejected the broadsheet format of its contemporaries and adopted the tabloid size of the story papers. The Dandy also introduced the use of speech balloons inside some of the stories although not all of them. Some of the stories retained the traditional style of having a picture with the text written beneath. It became one of the more famous British Comics. British Comics --Hotspur (remembered UK Comics)‘Hotspur' (D.C. Thomson) first appeared on 2nd . Sept. 1933. The stories in the first issue were Buffalo Bill's Schooldays, Japers of Red Circle, The Son of Scarface, The Swooping Vengeance, Colorado Kid, The Big Stiff and The Traiter of the Team. It became one of the best remembered British Comics.British Comics --The Eagle ( creative UK Comics)The Eagle was the brainchild of Reverend Marcus Morris, who created the title in response to what he saw as the growth in popularity of violent American comics. Morris and local artist Frank Hampson took their idea of wholesome boy's comic including ‘Dan Dare – Pilot of the Future', to Hulton Press who knew a good thing when they saw one. The Eagle was hugely influential and marked a departure from its contemporaries especially the British comics which had to sit up and take notice and change to compete with the new bigger kid on the block. It was one of the most striking and creative British Comics. We have an extensive collection of British Comics, such as Rover, Eagle Dandy, Beano, Wizard, Hotspur, Hornet, Adventure and many many more.
